The markings are along the top margin of the back pattern. The changing at the left part stands for the suit of cards while the right part stands for the number of cards. All the Markings are repeated at the bottom, so that you can read the cards from either end. The markings are usually made as tinting the pattern by using similar color of ink or make the line wider.
